The East Meadow Fire Department responded to a commercial fire at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1 at a Spice and Curry Halal Meat store, located at 2238 on Hempstead Turnpike, across from the Nassau University Medical Center.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to heavy flames, according to a spokesman for the East Meadow Fire Department. The fire spread to two adjoining stores, Wall St. Gold and Lewis Wine and Spirits. Firefighters declared the fire under control 90 minutes later.

The three buildings received substantial damage, but all were closed and unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries in the blaze. One was treated at the scene and another was transported to the NUMC and later released.

East Meadow Fire Chief John Priest said the cause of the fire was accidental and was not deemed to be suspicious.

Levittown, North Bellmore, Wantagh and North Merrick Fire Departments also responded to the scene. Seventy-five firefighters were present at the site.
