Unsound surf shop held its 7th annual surf art show and auction on June 11, which featured live music by the Shipwrecks and raised money for a local non-profit that benefits children and adults with special needs.

Each year, the event features some of the best artists and photographers from New York who display their work at the shop.

Proceeds were donated to the Tommy Brull Foundation, a Rockville Centre-based nonprofit organization focused on improving the lives of those with physical, mental and emotional challenges on Long Island.

The group was launched in 2008 and is dedicated to honoring the life of Rockville Centre resident and former Camp ANCHOR counselor Tommy Brull. Since its inception, the group has raised money for multiple charities, including Camp ANCHOR’s building fund.

“[The Unsound fundraiser] was really positive,” said Tommy Brull Foundation co-founder Martin Brull, Tommy’s brother and a local surfer, who added that the event raised $3,000 for the organization. “It was a fun time and I think we’ve had more people than ever before. Everyone was really into it — the Shipwrecks were really nice and they donated sales of their merchandise to us. And a lot of new people donated art work, and all of the money goes to the foundation.”

In 2014, the foundation launched a surfing camp at ANCHOR with instructors from the Long Beach-based non-profit Surf for All and, last year, Brull said that the group worked with more than 300 kids.

“We’ve had a tremendous response and parents of all the campers are extremely supporting,” he said of the program. “We’re growing the surf program at Camp Anchor and working with Surf for All, and started a six-week surf camp fully funded by the foundation.”
