Kiwanis ‘names that tune’ for a cause

Sixth annual fundraiser sends local children to Kamp Kiwanis

For the sixth straight year, East Meadow Kiwanis turned back the musical clock last Friday, enjoying music from multiple classic eras, while raising money for a good cause.

The Name That Tune fundraiser, held at the East Meadow Firefighters’ Benevolent Hall on Maple Avenue, is a night of musical trivia. About 80 Kiwanians divided into eight teams to play the game, and all proceeds from the evening will be used to send four East Meadow children to Kamp Kiwanis, in upstate Taberg, according to event co-chair Harry Demiris.

Demiris said music was featured from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, and the categories were rock and roll, disco and boy bands.

The evening is a community effort. Not only does the East Meadow Fire Department donate their hall annually, but Borrelli’s Italian Restaurant on Hempstead Turnpike donated gift certificates for the winning team, and a Taste of Home Bakery on North Jerusalem Road provided catering.

Alan Hodish is the event’s other co-chair, and past president Jim Smith served as the scorekeeper. “It’s a fun night for everybody,” said Demiris.
