Nine out of 10
To the Editor:
I am responding to your article on “Protesters to Skelos: Alow a vote on the Women’s Equality Act” in last week’s paper.
Sen. Dean Skelos will bring nine out of 10 critically needed women’s equality bills to the floor of the Senate for a vote, but not the extreme, unnecessary and dangerous abortion bill that can injure women.
New Yorkers don’t need or want abortion expansion that stands to put women’s lives in danger by allowing non-physicians to perform abortions. Nor do they want legislation that would establish a “fundamental” right of privacy, including the “right” to terminate a pregnancy, hindering and further risking necessary abortion regulations that also could injure women’s lives. Further, the proposed legislation does not provide for protection of conscience in institutions and would offer no guarantee those institutions would not be forced to provide abortions.
The nine points of the women’s equality agenda that Skelos is championing would support and promote the future well being and dignity of women. The last bill on abortion expansion would actually harm and disrespect the dignity of women’s lives. It is critical for government to support and promote the dignity of all women in society, the work place and especially in safe healthcare practices.
