Shapiro, who studied social work at Fordham and Sacred Heart universities, couldn’t help but grin as she looked around the playground. The two days she spends there each week, she said, are when she is happiest. “Working with a group of kids who have special needs and children who have more typical needs reminds me of how good people really are at the core,” she said. “The kids get along, interact with each other, and have as much fun together as any other group of kids playing.”
