Kathleen Rice wins congressional bid; Sen. Kemp Hannon re-elected

Incumbents who represent East Meadow in the state Senate and Assembly easily retained their seats on Tuesday night, and District Attorney Kathleen Rice defeated Bruce Blakeman in the 4th Congressional District race.

Rice defeated Blakeman by approximately 9,000 votes, earning 53 percent of the vote.

In the state Senate, Kemp Hannon defeated Democratic challenger Ethan Irwin to retain his seat in the 6th District, which he has held since 1989. Hannon garnered 63 percent of the vote. “I want to thank each and every resident who came out to vote,” said Hannon. “Exercising one’s right to vote is one of our most important fundamental freedoms, and I look forward to returning to Albany to continue doing the peoples’ work. I’m honored to have received such overwhelming support.”


East Meadow's Tom McKevitt was re-elected for the fifth time to represent the 17th Assembly District, earning 69 percent of the vote.

Assemblyman Michael Montesano, who represents Salisbury in the 15th Assembly District, easily defeated Democratic challenger Mario Ferone, who wasn't campaigning, obtaining 67 percent of the vote. "I am honored to receive such overwhelming support from the hardworking residents of the 15th Assembly District," Montesano said. "With your help, I can continue to proudly represent each and every one of you in Albany."

In state-wide races, Democratic incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo defeated challenger Rob Astorino, the Republican county executive of Westchester. As of Wednesday afternoon, Cuomo had 53 percent of the vote with about 14,000 of 15,000 election precincts reporting.

Democratic incumbent Comptroller Tom DiNapoli led Robert Antonacci II, a Republican from Syracuse, and incumbent Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, a Democrat from Manhattan, beat John Cahill, a Republican of Yonkers.
