Montesano’s an easy choice in the 15th A.D.

Voters in the 15th Assembly District will have at least one easy decision to make when they head to the polls on Tuesday: choosing Michael Montesano.

Montesano, the Republican incumbent, has held the seat since 2010. With an extensive career in law enforcement — he’s an attorney and a former New York City Police Department detective — it’s clear he has the qualifications needed to effect change in his district.

His platform revolves around targeting and eliminating political corruption in Albany. He is a member of the Assembly’s Ethics Committee, and said he has supported the strongest anti-corruption package “Albany has ever seen,” which includes the implementation of term limits.

A vote for his challenger, Mario Ferone, is essentially a vote for no representation. Ferone, 21, who’s from Plainview, ran for the same seat two years ago, and only occasionally campaigned. This time he’s not campaigning at all. Numerous attempts to contact him, and calls to the Democratic Assembly headquarters, went unanswered. It seems clear that Democrats put him there because they had no other options.

We support the 58-year-old Montesano’s re-election — but we’d urge him to be mindful of his district’s geography. The 17th District mostly occupies the Town of Oyster Bay — it runs vertically through central Nassau County, as far north as Bayville, and dips into the Salisbury portion of Westbury. Montesano, who lives in Glen Head, must not forget the southern portion of his district, and should be active and visible in Salisbury. It’s a relatively small community of about 12,000 people, but a tightly knit one that deserves the best possible representation.

Based on his history as a legislator, we believe Montesano has, and will continue, to deliver that.
