Run with the Rams on April 25

Seventh annual race will benefit two local families

The seventh Run with the Rams 5K and 1-mile fun run is just days away.

On Saturday, April 25, hundreds of runners will line up outside W.T. Clarke High School for a day of fitness and health that has become an annual staple in the Salisbury, Westbury and East Meadow communities.

Each year, funds raised benefit Clarke athletics, and are also donated to local community members or families who have fallen upon trying times.

This year, said event co-founder Josh Friedman, proceeds will be distributed to the family of Eric Helming, an East Meadow High School teacher who died earlier this year, and had two children at Woodland Middle School; and the family of Ellen Palmer, who has cancer, and has three children who graduated from W.T. Clarke.

The fun run kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on school grounds at 740 Edgewood Drive in Westbury, and the 5K starts 30 minutes later. Runners are asked to register prior to the races, and all participants will receive a race T-shirt. All times will be recorded by Island Timing.

The top three male and female finishers, as well as the top finishers in various age groups — for both the 5K and fun run — will receive separate awards.

The course winds through suburban streets in the Salisbury neighborhood. Last year, about 500 community members took part in the race.

It will be held rain or shine. Interested participants can call Friedman, who is the school’s athletic director, at (516) 876-7427, or email jfriedma@eastmeadow.k12.ny.us.

Cost of the 5K ranges from $15 to $25, based on date of registration and if you are a student or not. The fun run is either $10 or $15.

Runners can also register for the race online at active.com.
