Year's first blizzard buries East Meadow

A severe winter storm dumped 10 to 14 inches of snow on East Meadow from the early morning on Jan. 26 to Jan. 27, with winds whipping across the community at 25 to 35 miles per hour.

On Monday evening, the East Meadow School District closed schools on Tuesday in anticipation of the storm. Regents examinations scheduled for that day were rescheduled, with district officials asking students to check their respective high school’s website for more information.

The East Meadow Public Library closed at 1 p.m. on Monday, and remained closed throughout Tuesday.

Though the area did not receive the record-breaking storm that many meteorologists predicted, the snowfall still wreaked havoc on Monday evening commutes, and left roads covered in heavy snow on Tuesday morning.

The county saw 157 car accidents overnight, roughly double the norm in dry weather, County Executive Ed Mangano reported.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo had issued a travel ban after 11 p.m. on Monday, and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray declared a state of emergency in the township.

By noon on Tuesday, the snowfall had subsided, and Murray said that town crews were about 80 to 90 percent complete with snow removal.

The next step was for residents to bundle up, lace up their boots and shovel their driveways and walkways.
