An East Meadow man who beat his wife to death with a dumbbell was sentenced 18 years to life in prison on Jan. 4.

Hector Bejarano, 55, had pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder charge to Judge Jerald Carter on Oct. 28 and was later sentenced for the crime. At the time of the charge, Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas recommended a 20-year sentence to life in prison.

Bejarano will serve time for bludgeoning his wife, Mirian, 52, on April 28, 2015 with a dumbbell at their home on Prospect Avenue in East Meadow. According to reports, when police found Mirian on the floor unconscious, Bejarano had already fled the scene but left behind a note in his daughter’s bedroom confessing the crime. Bejarano was on the run for two weeks before returning to his home on May 14 to eat and do laundry where he was later arrested.

“This defendant savagely murdered his wife and was on the run for two weeks while relatives desperately searched for answers,” Singas said in a statement. “Mirian Bejarano’s life was tragically cut short by her husband’s heinous actions and I hope today’s sentence helps bring some closer to this grieving family.

Bejarano and Mirian had been married for nearly 30 years before the murder. Bejarano’s attorney, Dana Grossblatt, could not be reached for comment at press time.
