Girls Scouts honors its own

Girl Scouts of East Meadow earned praise for their achievements and dedication to their communities at Woodland Middle School on May 24, during the East Meadow Association of Girl Scouts’ award ceremony. Scouts were honored with either the 2018 Silver Award, which is the highest honor and eighth-grade Girl Scout can earn, or 2018 Bronze Award, which is the highest honor and Junior Girl Scout can earn.

The Silver Award recognizes girls who have completed their Cadette Journey, which paves the way for their Take Action Project. Some of this year’s Take Action projects included “The Giving Garden,” created by Alexa Scotti, Samantha Schlectman and Gitanjali Pooran, of Troop 1256. In an effort to address the absence of fresh produce at local food pantries, the girls created an online forum by which residents could learn how to garden so that they could give crops back to the community. Another includes the Low Budget Craft Project, created by Jenna Scheingold, of Troop 1061. Scheingold created the DIY craft forum and help service for friends to discover easy and fun crafts to make each other.

The Bronze Award also goes to girls who have completed a Take Action Project in order to better their community. One included “Hats for Hope,” in which several girls of Troop 1727 raised awareness for Pediatric Cancer by conducting research and decorating hats for children undergoing chemotherapy at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital. Another Bronze Award went to the girls of Troop 1847, whose project “Namaste Yogini” had Junior Girl Scouts teaching younger girls how to live healthier through yoga, meditation and proper nutrition.
