Holiday spirit is in the air in East Meadow

East Meadow’s “town square” is decked with boughs of holy and ready for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza and all of the winter holidays celebrated throughout the community.

The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce joined with Council of East Meadow Community Organizations on Dec. 5 for their 20th annual tree and menorah lighting at the Veterans Memorial Park.

The program began with the Pledge of Allegiance and Star Spangled Banner, led by Boy Scout Troop 362 under the direction of Scoutmaster Jim Surless. Past President Rich Bivone, the Master of Ceremonies, then introduced the elected officials and dignitaries in attendance.

Ringing in the holiday cheer with a medley of classic tunes was the Tri-M Music Honor Society Holiday Ensemble from East Meadow High School, directed by Zac Robason and Brittany Degro.

Next, Past Nassau County Presiding Officer Norma Gonalves led the lighting ceremony. Adjacent a grand menorah, a towering tree topped with a star sprung to life before members of the East Meadow Fire Department arrived with their truck and a friendly face: Santa Claus.Children lined up to take their photos and tell their wishes to the beloved Christmas character.

The event was made possible by coordinators Dolores Rome and Liz Fries. The Kirby family donated the Christmas tree; East Meadow High School students donated the menorah; the Knights of Columbus Pop Pius XII donated the crèche nativity scene; Patrick Curry, Dave Jones and James P. Skinner decorated the tree with ornaments; Mike Luzzi provided music by MPG Entertainment, and Pat Tropea and Betty Tucker dressed as clowns and were face-painting through the night.

Decorating the park was Frank Camarano, Liz Fries, Chamber President Mike Levy, Brian Nangle, Boy Scout Troop 362, Joe Parisi, George Reimers, Dolores and James Romes and Doug Wood. 7-Eleven hot chocolate was provided courtesy of Jane and Robert Dugan and Dunkin’ Donuts goods were provided by Joe Dazzo.
