Accepting the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport’s most prestigious award on Oct. 8, Jude Schanzer, Freeporter and the East Meadow Public Library’s director of public relations and programming, thanked her family for their support.

Schanzer, 64, has immersed herself in the arts since her childhood. Her father sang and her mother played the piano. Her brother is a poet and an Emmy award-winning filmmaker. “I’m a lover of the arts,” Schanzer said. And on Sunday, the Long Island Arts Council recognized her by awarding her with its Arts Recognition Tribute Award.

The annual event recognized two other honorees: Michael “Eppy” Epstein, who received the Champion of the Arts Award, and folk singer Caroline Doctorow, who received the Alexander Schanzer Memorial Smart with Art Award for arts professionals.

The Arts Council has served Freeport and its surrounding communities since 1974, committed to the idea that the power of the arts is to touch the mind and enrich the soul of the individual and community through advocacy and education.
