Oceanside celebrates Veterans Day 2017

Members of the Oceanside American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Jewish War Veterans and the Patriots Club gathered in the Oceanside High School auditorium on a blustery, cold day in November to celebrate an occasion close to all of their hearts, Veterans Day.

It was a simple ceremony, with the various group leaders giving brief comments on what the solemn event meant to them. John Robbins of the Jewish War Veterans Chwatsky Farber Post 717, Bob Transom of the American Legion Post 1246 and James Veit of the VFW Post 5199 all echoed similar sentiments. Veterans Day, they said, was a day to honor those who sacrificed their time, comfort and in some cases their lives to serve our country, regardless of the wars in which they served.

Afterwards, members of the school’s Patriot Club read the names of those Oceanside veterans who never returned, each accompanied with a single bell toll. Buddy Epstein of Post 717 finished the ceremony with a rendition of Taps.
