Rice wins third term in 4th C.D.

After a close race in Tuesday night’s election, Levittown Democrat Kevin Thomas upset Garden City Republican Kemp Hannon in the state’s 6th Senate District, defeating the incumbent who has held the seat since 1989.

“When I entered this race, I was a legal service attorney,” Thomas said. “I wanted to help others. That was my only intention of getting into this race.” The newcomer said that he was proud that the people of the 6th District allowed him a chance to fulfill that goal. He thanked his volunteers, his staff, his wife, Rincy, and “everyone who believed in me,” he said.

When asked for comment on the results of Tuesday night’s election, Kemp Hannon said that he was “disappointed,” adding that he is still working on health-related bills, five of which Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the day before the election. The most important, Hannon said, involves granting more rights to rape victims. “That’s gonna be my focus,” Hannon said, adding that he seeks to continue to stay involved in public policy moving forward.

Garden City Democrat Kathleen Rice easily won re-election to her 4th Congressional District seat, defeating Bellmore Republican newcomer Ameer Benno.

Republican 17th District State Assemblyman John Mikulin held onto his seat, and said he was honored to represent the people of his district and looked forward to continue working with them.

In the race for the state’s 15th Assembly District seat, which includes Salisbury and Eisenhower Park, Michael Montesano was victorious over challenger Democrat Allen Foley.
