Rockville Centre School District restoring tennis courts at Hewitt School

The tennis courts at Jennie E. Hewitt Elementary School in Rockville Centre are currently being restored, according to school officials, and should be ready for use next month.

Schools Superintendent Dr. William Johnson said the former tennis courts were unusable and “in such a state of disrepair” that they had to be replaced.” Like the previous courts, the new ones will be open to the public when school is not in session and when teams are not practicing on them. They are not used by the district for official games, Johnson said, because they are too small.

The project costs about $200,000 and was included in the budget, according to Robert Bartels, assistant superintendent for business and personnel. He added that though there is “no definitive date” for completion, the district hopes the courts will be available for use again by mid-October.

“They were in bad shape, there were safety concerns,” Bartels said. “It was time to replace them.”
