A special kind of homecoming

Senior Lindsay Dower said that it would have been a lot worse if the student body had not stayed together, and she credited Superintendent Dr. Roseanne Melucci and the teaching staff. “Being separated … I think was an option early,” Dower said, “but they didn’t let that happen.” She added that the teachers have done a great job of preparing the students for the A.P. tests next month.

Sophomore Christina Phelan said that their new principal, Joe Spero, helped enormously. “I’m thrilled to return the students to their home in East Rockaway,” Spero said. “They and their families have emerged from this challenge as triumphant models of strength and resilience.”

Some bright spots during the ordeal included a successful fundraiser, “Rebuild the Rock,” by a group of ERHS alumni; a “Bring Back the Music” talent show, hosted by Jericho High School, to help replace instruments and music department supplies lost in the storm; being featured in three commercials on NBC’s “Smash”; and the juniors and seniors winning their dream prom, hosted by Rent the Runway. Out-of-state schools also raised funds, and there were donations from the East Rockaway Education Foundation and help from the Village Foundation.

“We’re looking forward to having all the students and staff back at East Rockaway High School,” said Melucci. “I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to reconstruct the building and have the students return. I also want to thank the students, their parents and the staff for their support and patience during this very difficult time for our school district.”

A celebration for the students is planned for this Friday at noon at the Bay Park Pavilion. Student I.D. is required.

A shining moment for Lawrence

A tumultuous year is closing on a high note for Lawrence High School students. They resumed classes and activities in a familiar environment after being out of their school building for 10 weeks.
