Candidates take mayoral, trustee seats

The Lynbrook village government will remain essentially unchanged, as Mayor William Hendrick and Trustees Allan Beach and Thomas Atkinson each retained their offices in last week’s unopposed election.

“I am honored to have another opportunity to serve as the Mayor of Lynbrook, in the village that I love,” Hendrick said after being reelected on March 18. Both of his running mates said they too were grateful to have another term in office.

“I am humbled I have another opportunity to serve this community,” Beach said. “As everyone in Lynbrook knows, we are a community of neighbor helping neighbor, and are all committed to our shared goals of a fantastic Lynbrook. I consider all our residents friends, and neighbors.”

Atkinson said he was honored by the support the candidates received from residents.

“It really is incredibly humbling anytime somebody goes out and takes the time to vote for you, so I’m certainly very proud of that,” he said. “I’m looking forward to continuing to represent the community in an understated and professional manner.”

Far fewer voters came out to the polls for this election than did in 2011. This year, Hendrick received 274, Beach, 272, and Atkinson, 259.

With the administration remaining in tact, Hendrick said he would ensure the village’s plans would persist without interruption.

“My goals are to continue the forward progress and revitalization that we have been enjoying in my last mayoral term,” he said. “I guarantee Lynbrook will continue to be known as the premiere south shore community that businesses, families, and seniors continue to enjoy. "

In East Rockaway, longtime trustee and Deputy Mayor Bruno Romano was elected to office with 585 votes. His running mates Gordon Fox garnered 531 votes, and Rich Bilello, 538 votes. All three candidates ran unchallenged.

“I’m extremely thankful to our neighbors who cast their vote for me and my running mates last Wednesday,” said Romano. “We are an extremely strong team who are committed to continuing the excellent work started by Mayor Fran Lenahan. There’s no doubt in any of our minds that we will continue to make East Rockaway an even better place to live, work and raise a family.” Romano said that it will be his top goal to lead the village down the same path started by Lenahan by “valuing each and every taxpayer dollar to ensure our one square mile village remains responsive, provides top-notch governmental services to every middle class family and seniors as well as continue to improve village finances for our future. I would also like to thank my wife, Theresa, and my boys Anthony and Joseph for their support, as I assume this new responsibility and honor of being the Mayor of our wonderful village.”

"I want to thank my family for their support and the people of East Rockaway for putting their faith in us,” said Bilello. “We promise every day to earn that trust and work hard to keep making East Rockaway a great place to live."

“I want to thank the residents of East Rockaway for the trust they have in me to provide for the needs of our village,” said Fox. “I believe we have a strong, cohesive team and look forward to continuing the work of the prior administration. Economic issues are always in the forefront of topics that affect every resident of Long Island and we will continue to keep costs under review to control the impact to our residents. I want to thank my family and friends for supporting me and look forward to serving the residents of our great village.”
