Capri motel guest arrested after fleeing police

A Central Islip Man with an outstanding Suffolk County warrant for the sale of narcotics was arrested Friday morning on Reyam Road after fleeing police outside the Capri Motor Inn, the Lynbrook Police Department confirmed.

Police approached the 34-year-old man, who was accompanied by a woman, on Freer Street shortly after 9 a.m. in a routine patrol of the area. According to Chief Joseph Neve, the man took off on foot when he was approached by police.

The man hopped a nearby fence into the backyard of a home on Reyam Road, injuring himself in the process. The chase lasted about four to five minutes. He was arrested and transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. The woman wasn’t arrested, though Neve said it was later confirmed that she and the man were staying in a room together at the Capri Motor Inn on Freer Street.

Friday's arrest is the second arrest made on Freer Street near the motel this month, which has frustrated neighboring residents for years.

At a Town Hall meeting on May 12, several residents who live near the motel said they believed it was a nuisance to the community. The village began taking steps to curtail suspicious activity there in 2009, meeting with motel employees, according to Village Administrator John Giordano, who said that the village recommended adding security cameras, improving lighting and limiting the number of suspiciously short-staying guests.
