The East Rockaway Post Office reopened on Dec. 28 for the first time since Hurricane Sandy flooded its infrastructure — and for now, the office has limited retail services due to phone and Internet interruption.

According to a press release from the UPS, in the aftermath of the hurricane, utility and phone companies continue to work on restoring full power at the East Rockaway post office for retail services to begin in the near future. Until now, employees and patrons have been working out of the Lynbrook Post Office on Broadway, along with the Island Park services.

Post Office box holder services will be available. Customers having a post office box at the East Rockaway office may access their post office box to pick up mail starting on Friday. As a reminder, the postal service offers an online post office at www.usps.com open 24/7.

“The U.S. Postal Service wants to remind customers who have evacuated or relocated due to the storm to submit a change of address, place mail on hold or request that mail be temporarily forwarded to their new location. They can do so by visiting www.usps.com and complete the online request or visit any post office to fill out a permanent or temporary change of address card.”

Many customer inquiries about mail services can be answered by calling the USPS Customer Service Center at 1-800-ASK USPS   (1-800-275-8777). The East Rockaway post office is located at 10 Main St. East Rockaway, NY 11518.

Retail window hours are Mon-Fri 9 a .m. to 5:00pm and Sat 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Box access hours are Mon-Sat 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
