Three local residents were among those named Women of Distinction at an annual banquet last Saturday hosted by State Assemblyman Brian Curran, of Lynbrook.

Kelly Anne Ambrosio, of Lynbrook, and Patricia Renner and Kathy Schwarting, both of East Rockaway, were among the 21 women in Curran’s 21st District who were recognized for going above and beyond the call of “civic engagement and outreach,” Curran said.

“The selflessness these women have shown to our community is an uplifting example of devotion to our area and residents,” he said at the event. “It’s my honor to show them this small token of recognition for the hard work and dedication they have shown to our community. We are very lucky to have them as our friends and neighbors. My special thanks go to the families of our honorees, who have allowed their loved ones to spend so much time caring for others.”

“I am humbled and honored to be included with all of the 2015 Women of Distinction,” Ambrosio said.

From 1999 to 2005, she volunteered for the Lynbrook Fire Department, serving as an advanced medical technician and lieutenant of the Emergency Medical Company.

In 2004, her first son, Christopher, was born with severe hemophilia, a rare hereditary bleeding disorder. It was then that Ambrosio and other mothers of children with bleeding disorders established the New York City Hemophilia Chapter. She and her family visit Albany every year to meet with lawmakers to discuss potential legislation focusing on patients with this illness.

For the past seven years, Ambrosio has overseen the Christopher’s Hemophilia Benefit, which raises money for the National Hemophilia Walk in New York City and the benefit has been the top fundraisers for hemophilia in the country for several years.

Ambrosio has been a registered nurse for 15 years at North Shore-LIJ Hospital in Manhasset. She has worked in emergency rooms and in the home infusion and post-anesthesia care unit — where she currently holds the assistant nurse manager.
