East Rockaway Mayor Ed Sieban dies at 49
Wake and funeral planned for July 7-9
Residents, friends and family members are grieving over the loss of East Rockaway Mayor Edward Sieban, who died unexpectedly on July 3 after a brief stay at Winthrop University Hospital. Sieban was 49. The cause of death was acute pancreatitis. “The Village of East Rockaway has lost its leader with the passing of Mayor Ed Sieban,” said Deputy Mayor Richard Meagher, who is now acting mayor. “... I have lost a friend [and] the residents have lost a champion who, above all, looked out for their interests and well-being. Of all my regrets over the community’s loss of its leader, perhaps the deepest is that we will never know the ideas he would have come up with in the future.” Sieban was elected in March of 2007. While the election was uncontested, it attracted the highest turnout for any uncontested village election. Sieban was also the 2nd vice president of the Nassau County Village Officials Association. “I know I speak for the entire NCVOA membership when I say how saddened I felt when I learned of Ed’s passing,” said the group’s president, Marvin Natiss. “His leadership qualities and intellect were instantly apparent, and he was recruited to join the executive committee. There is no doubt the East Rockaway community and the NCVOA have lost a great friend and leader.” Sieban’s government service extended beyond the village to the Town of Hempstead, where he served as deputy county clerk and as chief of staff and counsel to the Hempstead Town Board. “He was a wonderful guy, a dedicated public servant, an incredible husband and father — just someone who will be sorely missed,” said Town Councilman Anthony Santino. “He will leave difficult shoes to fill. His passing leaves an incredible void in the heart of our village and in the hearts of all those who were privileged to know him.”

Ed was perhaps the finest, kindest and careing man I have ever met. An unselfish man that really gave his all for the East Rockaway community. He always had a smile and kept his fine propper demeanor at all times, no matter what. He made people rise up to his level, he never lowered himself to thiers. I will miss him so very much, I miss him now. May he find peace with God in heaven.

In the short time that I knew him, Ed was extremely kind and helpful to me.
I only wish I had the privilege of knowing him longer. May he rest in peace. I will say a prayer for his family.

Ed was one of my favorite people. He was on the town board and always at the town (Oceanside) meetings just standing, leaning against the wall absorbing everything that was said at the meeting. He was the only one that helped my family with a land issue. He achieved, what I thought was the impossible. He went out of his way to leave his office and drive to my home to see if he can help and he did. He enabled us to take care of land behind our home that was an eyesore and used as a dumping ground. Every time I look at my yard I think of all of the help he gave us to achieve the ability to live in a nice home with a beautiful yard to look at instead of a dumping ground. We will forever be grateful to this amazing man. He was always there if we needed help with anything. I loved seeing him occasionally at King Kullen in RVC, he always had pleasant words to share and just made me believe in people in government. He will truly be missed. My deep, heart felt condolences for the Sieban family.
Ed was much more than a Mayor, he was a person who extended his hand to help the whole community. He shared his moments with us and he shared his family with us. He gave 150% of himself to improve the quality of living for everyone. He was a man who exemplifys the true mean of making life worth living by always being there for his children and his wife, as well as being on call all the time for all the community emergencies. Whether it be the Huckleberry Frolic or a Dinner or some Scout function, he always had a smile and a warm welcome that made you feel as if you were a part of something very special. East Rockaway and all the residents have lost a very special man and his accomplishments will always be appreciated. I will miss my Mayor, but most of all, my friend.
I am deeply sorry to hear of the passing of our mayor, I love this town and our mayor was a great man, I did not know him personally but my son knew his son teddy from rhame avenue school and my deepest sympathy goes out to his wife and family.
