Getting down to the nitty-gritty

Education Foundation plans for upcoming year, announces officers

There was a lot of organizational “nitty-gritty” that had to be taken care of at the East Rockaway Education Foundation’s first meeting of the 2013-14 school year held on Sept. 25 in the East Rockaway High School conference room.

The nine directors present were joined by East Rockaway’s new superintendent of schools, Lisa Ruiz, who got to experience firsthand one of the livelier EREF meetings.

The nominations committee, having worked through the summer months, was able to present a slate of officers for 2013-14 (with elections in October): They are: president, Richard Meagher; vice president, Vera Gallagher; vice president/general counsel, Irene Villacci; treasurer, Cathy Tierney; corresponding secretary, Jane Brezenoff, and recording secretary, Dan Caracciolo.

Absent director Maureen McManus was praised for having done the hard work over the summer of preparing an Excel Spreadsheet for the Adopt-a-Seat Program for the high school auditorium. There were 616 original seats (including 140 remaining balcony seats). Four seats were not replaced to allow for wheelchair placements. A total of 215 seats had been adopted (including 23 remaining balcony seats). Authorization was given in a unanimous vote to replace the destroyed 192 plaques and to begin the process as soon as possible. A tentative timetable would aim for completion of the replacement of the destroyed plaques by late fall, followed by a re-opening of the “Adopt-a-Seat” program with an eventual goal of having all remaining seats adopted.

After discussion, authorization was given to transfer remaining funds in the special Sandy Relief Fund to the school district at the Oct. 15 Board of Education meeting. Money received for that purpose, if any, and after that date, would be deposited in the regular account and subsequently transferred to the district.

Caracciolo reported that a fall and spring fundraiser were under consideration, and added that there would be further updates coming at the October meeting. It was also noted that the next dinner dance would probably take place in 2014-15.

The next EREF meeting is scheduled for Mon., Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the high school conference Room.
