Girl Scout looks to beautify West End

A Lynbrook High School student, and Girl Scout in Troop No. 2378, has raised close to $4,000 for a beautification of West End Elementary School as part of her Gold Award project.

Annamarie Malik, an Ambassador in the Girl Scouts, said she had the idea of the project for her Silver Award, but it didn’t work out for her. This time around, she was determined to get the project on track, even if it wasn’t her first idea.

“I had this idea from this piece of property where I lived, but the person never got back to me,” she said. “So, I decided to do it in another area in my community, and I saw the place at West End.”

She received money from friends and family members as well as yard and bake sales to raise $2,196 for the project, which was donated to the Lynbrook Board of Education. The West End PTA also supported the project by donating $1,755.

The Lynbrook Board of Education accepted both donations at their July 1 meeting. The money will go toward benches, bushes and trees in an area around West End. The district will purchase the benches and trees for the project.

Once the area is complete, Malik said that she would then couple the beautification with a discussion with local children about reading, which Malik said she loves to do. After that she has to conduct a survey and create a YouTube video, which will be the global portion of the project.

A Gold Award is Girl Scouting’s greatest achievement. After the Girl Scouts of Nassau accepts their proposal, the Girl Scout has to carry out a project that requires a minimum of 80 hours that includes advocacy, community involvement and sustainable change.

Malik said that she hopes the benches are in during the next couple of weeks and that the project will be completed by October the latest.
