High schools' bond passes

Voters approved the Valley Stream Central High School District’s proposed $41 million bond on Tuesday with 612 yes votes to 528 no votes, or 54 percent of ballots cast.

“On behalf of the entire district, I would like to thank the community for its support of this proposal,” said Superintendent Bill Heidenreich in a statement. “We are now able to make improvements that are much needed and provide for a more modern, 21st-century learning environment for our students. Thank you to all who participated.”

The major projects the bond will fund are roof repairs to the Central, North and South high schools, as well as Memorial Junior High School. In addition to roof repairs, the bond will cover upgrades to science classrooms, masonry, bathrooms, electrical services and ventilation. A multi-sport artificial-turf field is outlined for every school except CHS, due to lack of space. The fields account for roughly $8 million of the bond’s total.

Heidenreich said an architect’s report found that the roofs have only two to three years left, and called the bond proposal “proactive planning.”
