At the Jan. 14 meeting of the Lynbrook Public Schools Board of Education, Superintendent Melissa Burak presented acknowledgments to high school students Patty Loonie, Stephanie Milillo, Shannon Wren and Ray Mohler.

Patty was named an All-State Athlete for soccer, while Stephanie and Shannon achieved All-State status for volleyball.

Ray was commended by the Lynbrook/East Rockaway Herald as a 2014 Person of the Year for a foundation he initiated to provide gifts to children in need.

Thomas Graham, director of physical education, health and athletics, presented the results of a health education survey focusing on substance abuse. Overall, results revealed that students find the district’s health education program effective in teaching the dangers of substance abuse and communicating ways to avoid use and get help. The district continues to look at ways to prevent substance abuse and will join forces with a local consortium that is being established to further educate the public on the topic.

Dr. Burak noted that although the 2015-16 school year calendar has not been formally adopted, the first day of school would likely be prior to Labor Day. The North Middle School construction work endured a slight setback due to heavy rain in December and extremely cold temperatures in January, and an early-to-mid-April completion is now anticipated.

The Board approved a tenure recommendation for teacher Andrea Diffendale. Several donations to the district were approved as well, with contributions from Joe’s Pizza, Box Tops for Education (General Mills, Inc.), Exxon Mobil Educational Alliance Program and the NEFCU “Funding Your Ideas” Teacher Grant program providing support to programs. Additionally, Board of Education President Robert Paskoff shared heartfelt remarks about former Superintendent and West End School Principal Edward Murphy, who passed away in early January.
