Applauds BOE for veterans’ vote

To the Editor:
I applaud every member of the Lynbrook school board who voted to pass the veteran’s tax exemption, which will provide a small deduction in the property tax bill of veterans living in Lynbrook and who have served this country in combat and protected our way of life.
This was not an easy issue for the school  board to consider, but I’m certain that every school board member had the best interests of the district, parents and students at heart when considering this exemption.

I want to particularly commend board trustees Rob Paskoff, Lesli Deninno and David Yaker for following through with their campaign promises to bring this issue to a vote this year.

Real estate fees are a travesty

To the Editor:
It is a travesty that all but one Nassau County legislator voted in favor of exorbitantly raising the fees on real estate transactions in the county to the highest in the state. The percentage of these raises is outrageous.
County homeowners already pay some of the highest taxes in the country.  Many homeowners are still reeling from the financial impacts of Superstorm Sandy. Those struggling with mounting bills, seeking to refinance just to stay in their homes will now see much higher fees. The same goes for purchasers. When and where does it stop?
By voting to impose a heavy financial burden on a large group of constituents, many of whom are still struggling, you risk losing a population of people who are the backbone of Nassau County — and vital for its economic success.
