Nassau County’s gone mad!

To the Editor:

In their zeal to extort as much money from taxpayers as they can, Nassau County has implemented roving speed trap vans, used much like their infamous red light cameras. They park near schools, and if you exceed the 20 mph posted speed, they mail you an $80 ticket.

A friend of mine, who lives in Valley Stream, told me that she got seven tickets, ranging from 22 to 25 mph — all near her own home (she lives on a school street). All seven tickets were over a two-day period.

I, too, live on a school street, and for the safety of the children, I want cars to drive at greatly reduced rates of speed. But getting a ticket for driving 2 mph over the posted 20 mph speed limit is a bit much to accept.

Are you aware that if you get a bogus ticket in Nassau County and are found not guilty in court, you still are forced to pay a $30 appearance fee? That’s right, you’re innocent but need to pay anyway! And if you pay by credit card, they tack on an additional $5 service fee.

We are living in a county gone mad! Nassau is one of the highest-taxed counties in America as it is, so how much more of this extortion can we take by our elected officials before we see a real taxpayer rebellion?

I for one would vote for Donald Duck if he ran on a platform of taxpayer rights, especially in regard to the Nassau traffic control reform and the courts. Enough is enough.

Let’s hear it for the girls!

To the Editor:

It seems like every Sunday morning newspaper has a photo and a headline about our local high school football teams. Well, there are two other teams that are quietly advancing to their league championships and they play for Lynbrook High School. I’m talking about the varsity girls’ soccer and the Varsity girls’ volleyball teams.
