Local author's fantasy becomes a reality

A local author is nearing the completion of a series of young adult fantasy novels, as the third volume of Diana Beirne’s Aurelious Forty, a four part series, debuted last week.

It was the third book of the series to hit stores since December, as Beirne said she wanted to tell the long story of Aurelious, a young boy growing up in the foster care system, as quickly as possible.

“I released the first two books within days of each other back in December,” Bierne said. “I released all three really right on top of each other because I really wanted to capture some momentum with the series. If there is a teenager somewhere who has connected with the story, I didn’t want them to have to wait for the next volume, especially in today’s fast paced world.”

Beirne, a former college educator and now a full-time author, said she has been for nearly her whole life. She started creative writing as a young girl and always pursued it as a hobby, dreaming of one day writing a full book.

“I was never really confident I could write an entire book,” she explained. “I didn’t really think I had enough of a story, enough information, in my head.”

After years of dreaming of completing a novel, she said she decided enough was enough. She sat down in front of her laptop, and just started writing, determined not to stop until she had completed the story.

“I really just started without a specific idea in my mind, other than the idea that I really wanted to write a book,” she said. “So I just sat down and started writing. I finished the first chapter and I said, ‘maybe I can do this,’ so I just kept going. I just kept writing, and the more I wrote the story, the more it seemed to take a life of its own and flow out of me.”

She said her decision to write a fantasy novel for teenagers after being inspired by some of her favorite books, including C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series.

“The magic in those stories really appealed to me,” she said. “Its such a fun genre to write and to read and it really lets your imagination flourish. I think it allows for a really deep, rich story to develop.”
