Lynbrook parents filled the high school cafeteria on Nov. 20 for a PTA Joint Council presentation titled “Acronyms in Education.”
The presentation, conducted by members of the district’s administrative team, decoded and demystified the alphabet soup of education, explaining everything from APPR, AIS and CCLS to DDI, RtI and PARCC.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Melissa Burak began by summarizing the key purpose of the evening.
“We all share the same concerns,” she said. “We all want the best education for our children. Our instructional core consists of presenting content that will make students college- and career-ready, giving teachers the tools they will need to be effective and providing personalized learning to assure all students’ needs are being met. We have always strived to provide a learning-oriented environment, not a performance-oriented environment.”
Assisted by administrators from around the district, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Gerard Beleckas explained how the district is strategically and thoughtfully strengthening instruction using a wide range of available resources.
The first segment of the presentation focused on the Common Core Learning Standards and how the district has been working over the past two years to align its curriculum to ensure students are acquiring the knowledge and skills they will need to be college- and career-ready. Administrators gave the audience insight into what the Common Core looks like in ELA and math classroom settings, using examples to illustrate how this new approach to learning differs from a traditional classroom.
The district also addressed the assessment tools it is employing to ensure all students are acquiring the skills they will need to be successful in this new learning environment, without putting added testing pressure on students. The district has been striving to utilize data-driven instruction to help teachers identify students who are in need of additional support.
