The 10th annual Lynbrook Relay for Life walk was held on Sat., May 16 at Lynbrook’s South Middle School on Union Avenue.

This organized, community-based fundraiser includes teams of sponsored people who walk around the school’s track to raise money for cancer research. Many of the participants are cancer survivors themselves, or friends and relatives of someone who lost their battle with the disease. “It was fantastic,” said Sheila Dillon, who, along with Laurie Faust, co-chaired the event. “We were a little nervous about the weather, but we had a beautiful turnout and exceeded last year’s goal, raising about $58,000.” (This is an unofficial total). The proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society for research and other projects.

Amidst the food, games and activities, the day includes a Survivors’ Lap, where all of the cancer survivors at the event take the first lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while cheered on by the other participants who line the track.

Relay For Life events also recognize and celebrate caregivers, who give time, love, and support to their friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers facing cancer.

The Luminaria Ceremony takes place after dark, so people who have lost their battle with cancer and be honored. For more information about Relay for Life, visit Relayforlife.org/LynbrookNY or contact Brittany.Lawton@cancer.org.
