Elvis rocks the house in Lynbrook

Before Elvis left the building, he was spotted at the Lynbrook Public Library on Jan. 28 at the Historical Society of East Rockaway and Lynbrook’s 14th annual Winter Tea fundraiser.

As Elvis Presley, portrayed by East Meadow resident Lamar Peters, gyrated his hips and sang such classics as “Jailhouse Rock” and “All Shook Up,” about 80 Lynbrook and East Rockaway residents grooved to the beat.

“I thought it was hopping,” HSERL President Patricia Sympson said. “Everyone was just so happy, so enthusiastic. It just kind of reverberated through the entire group of people.”

In addition to “The King’s” entertainment, the event also featured raffles and “blue suede scones,” a unique desert filled with blueberry jam and clotted cream, which were handed out by Girl Scouts. Daniel Alter served as the master of ceremonies.

Each year, the historical society has a different theme for their Winter Tea. Last year’s theme was women’s suffrage, acknowledging 100 years of women having the right to vote in the U.S. According to Sympson, at that tea, members of the historical society discussed how 2017 also marked the 40th anniversary of Presley’s death, and decided to have the tea in his honor this year.

The event raised more than $2,000, which will fund historical society programs and scholarships for high school seniors in Lynbrook and East Rockaway.
