Lynbrook police arrested an off-duty NYPD police officer Sunday after he menaced a man with a handgun.

According to Lynbrook police, Sean Maxwell, 35, who works for the 17th precinct of the NYPD and lives in Lynbrook, was arrested for the incident, which took place at the intersection of Birch Street and Lenox Avenue in Lynbrook.

The Lynbrook Police Department received a call at 7:38 p.m. last Sunday. The victim, who witnesses say was attending a barbecue, told police that Maxwell was speeding toward the intersection and ran a stop sign. When the victim yelled at Maxwell to stop at the stop sign, he put his car in park and asked the victim, “Do we have a problem here?” police said. According to the victim, Maxwell pulled up his shirt to expose a black handgun in his waistband and asked the question again.

The victim told police that the man then removed the gun from his waistband and pointed it in the direction of the victim before getting back in his car and driving away.

The LPD was notified that Maxwell sped off in a grey car and the person who called the police also gave them his license plate number. After the officers ran the license plate and found Maxwell’s address, they arrested him at his home on Birch Street for menacing with a handgun.

The NYPD was notified of the arrest and responded to Lynbrook police headquarters to begin an investigation of Maxwell. He was then suspended and released by the LPD.

Maxwell is due in Nassau County First District Court in Hempstead on June 22.
