St. James hosts annual fundraiser to feed the hungry

What does the world need now? According to the performers of Arts from the Heart, held at St. James United Methodist Church in Lynbrook on March 12, it's kindness, compassion, respect, faith, hope and love.

Coming together for the 6th annual event to help feed the hungry, the show included old favorites ("Let me be there," "We are one," "What the world needs now") along with some original tunes ("Wouldn't you say she's lovely?") The lineup also included vocalists, guitar players and piano renditions, all under the musical direction of Jean Stevenson, who also accompanied many of the vocalists on piano.

"This year is our sixth year of doing Arts From the Heart," said Stevenson, "and the final event was, once again, bigger and better than I could have imagined. It's both humbling and a thrill to work with such talented musicians."

The Women for St. James provided desserts and refreshments, and the church's thrift shop volunteers held a silent auction with art works from their store. Money raised was donated to The Interfaith Nutrition Network, private social service agency based in Hempstead that helps hungry people.

"But the bottom line is that our audience — a warm and encouraging crowd — donated generously to the cause, and that is ever more important in the world as we know it,” Stevenson said.
