Traffic cameras proposed in Lynbrook

Proposals to install 12 new traffic cameras and replace five others in Lynbrook were due on Dec. 28. These traffic cameras would not fine motorists for running a red light, but would instead be used for security purposes.

“Officials feel the cameras will serve as a deterrent to crime and as an investigatory aid for law enforcement,” said Village Spokeswoman Leslie Rothschild.

The cameras would monitor traffic at up to 16 intersections in the village, mainly along busy streets like Merrick Road and Ocean and Atlantic avenues. In addition to adding 12 new cameras, five older cameras that were installed in 2010 under a grant from former Legislator Francis Becker would be replaced.

Rothschild said that the cost of the project depends on a number of factors, including the amount of cameras the board of trustees votes to install, and which method of technology is used to operate the system. Once the final costs are known, she added, a determination will be made on whether the project will be funded by grants, bonds or money from the reserves.

Work on the project would begin “no later than five months” after the bid is awarded, according to the village’s request for proposals. The village board is scheduled to discuss three of the proposals at its next board meeting, on Jan. 22.
