Twenty-five descendants of Fosters Meadow — a Long Island farming community that was purchased by Thomas and Christopher Foster in 1650, was populated by a German-speaking farming community in the 1850s, and is now home to parts of Elmont, Rosedale, Valley Stream, Laurelton, Springfield, Franklin Square, West Hempstead and Jamaica — united on June 4 to tidy up their ancestor’s family plots at the St. Boniface’s Roman Catholic Church cemetery in Elmont. More than 50 people attended a horseradish demonstration on April 9, at 10 a.m., at the Franklin Square Museum in Franklin Square. The event was hosted by the Fosters Meadow Heritage Center and sponsored by the Franklin Square Historical Society. Attendees were shown how horseradish used to be made by the German families of Fosters Meadow — a Long Island pastureland and farming community settled by a German population in the mid-1800s, which is now home to parts of Elmont, Rosedale, Valley Stream, Laurelton, Springfield, Franklin Square, West Hempstead and Jamaica. more
Nearly 200 people gather last Sunday for the Rottkamp traditional family reunion, held at the Irish American Society of Nassau, located at 297 Willis Ave. in Mineola. The Rottkamp name has been associated with Long Island for more than 150 years, and the family has held its reunion in the community since 1947. more
