In a ceremony highlighted by beautiful musical performances, seniors from H. Frank Carey High School, along with their family members, friends and local dignitaries, celebrated their graduation on June 28.

Those in attendance heard speeches from Class of 2015 advisers Victoria McQuade and Lauren Scarpati, Senior Class President Michael Kohen and Salutatorian Maria Gargiulo, who told fellow classmates they should serve as the “quintessential generation, the most perfect model of what it means to be empowered global citizens, who will act to help improve the state of the world as a whole.”

Valedictorian Kacie Candela also addressed her fellow graduates and said that although society uses various testing methods to quantify education, the most important aspect of education, personal growth, cannot be measured quantitatively.

Candela also urged the Class of 2015 to take time in the future to ask themselves frequently if their career, or interests, or even another human being brings them joy in the purest form.

Principal Valerie Angelillo congratulated the graduates and presented the James A. DeSonne Award to Michael DeLeo, the John E. London Award to Michael Kohen, the Principal’s Award to Kacie Candela and Maria Gargiulo and the Hall of Fame Award to Jenna Turato.

Other notable speakers at the ceremony included Sewanhaka Central High School District Superintendent Dr. Ralph Ferrie, who urged students to uncover their core values and use them as a template to test the decisions they make in life and United States Senator Charles Schumer, who extended his congratulations to students before encouraging them to ‘Go for it’ as they navigate their futures.

The momentous ceremony concluded with the conferring of diplomas and the singing of the school’s Alma mater.
