Dutch Broadway students ‘Pay it Forward’

Students at Dutch Broadway School, part of the Elmont Union Free School District, raised more than $4,500 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during its Pennies for Patients campaign.

The fundraising effort was held from March 2-20, and included an assembly, which gave students in grades K through 6 an overview of the disease and the number of people it affects. The children were also educated on how the donated money is used and how close the organization is to finding a cure.

During the three-week collection period, student council members shared facts about the disease with the student body as part of the school’s daily announcements. Members of the student council also constructed collection boxes and created signs to promote the fundraising event.

This was the first year Dutch Broadway participated in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients drive, thanks to a suggestion from AIS teacher Carol Stopol, whose son was diagnosed with the disease more than 25 years ago.
