Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, second left, Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, left, Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney, second right, and Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin, right, presented the Town of Hempstead Veterans Service Award to Frank Castronovo, of Elmont, during the town’s Salute to Veterans event in June, at Town Park Point Lookout. The Veterans Service Award is presented to veterans who selflessly dedicate their time and resources to helping fellow veterans in need. Castronovo, a 98-year-old veteran of World War II, has been a dedicated member of Elmont American Legion Post 1033 for the past 30 years. As the post’s oldest active member, Castronovo serves as Community Relations Director and gives updates on all community news at every post meeting. Castronovo also prepares hot dogs for hundreds of people returning to the post following Memorial Day and Veterans Day parades.
