Franklin Square man killed attempting to cross Route 80 on foot

A Franklin Square man was struck by two cars and killed early Tuesday morning while attempting to cross Route 80 in Totowa, New Jersey, State Police said.

According to police, Naishadh Patel, 58, was a passenger in a 2006 Mercedes Benz driving east bound on the highway. The car pulled over onto the shoulder and Patel exited. He then attempted to cross the highway, heading north.

While walking across Route 80 Patel was hit by a 2006 Lexus SUV and then a 2008 Subaru Forrester at about 12:15 a.m., officials said.

He was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:35 a.m., near mile marker 55.2. Police are still investigating the circumstances of the accident. A toxicology report is still pending, police said.
