In search of ins, and abouts, overs and arounds

Alden Terrace School first-graders in Maria Leva’s class put on their detective hats and searched for clues during a recent grade-level activity that focused on the use of prepositions.

The lesson highlighted the daily grammar skills the students are learning as part of the district’s ReadyGen reading program and began with students identifying prepositions with their teacher and putting them into sentences.

After the review, students sang and danced to the “Preposition Song” by the Bazillions with their classmates before beginning a scavenger hunt to find “Peter Preposition,” a paper cut out created by their teacher.

Armed with a magnifying glass and clipboard that included a preposition clue, students searched the first floor of their school building. Once they located Peter Preposition, students returned to their class and thought of a new place to hide him. They then wrote a clue that included a preposition for a neighboring class so they too could be part of the activity.
