Carmen
The Long Island Opera Company is back with its fall production of Georges Bizet’s beloved opera. Bizet’s masterpiece of obsession, jealousy and revenge features a stellar cast and innovative staging by Anne-Julia Audray, conducted by Scott Jackson Wiley. A fully staged production, with an engaging score and involving story, this is arguably the most popular of all operas. Set to Bizet’s unforgettable music, Carmen’s tale of the dangerous passion between Carmen and Don Jose, whose doomed love for her destroys them both, is always enthralling. Be seduced by Bizet’s irresistible rhythms as his riveting tale of love and lust comes alive. Carmen’s unforgettable score contains intoxicating melodies and the sultry sounds of Spain — highlighted by some of opera’s finest arias and best-loved moments.

The Hot Sardines
Fusing musical influences from New York, Paris, and New Orleans, The Hot Sardines transforms songs from another era into pop music for this century. Their sound is steeped in foot-stomping jazz, salty stride piano, and the kind of music Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, and Fats Waller used to make. In the talented hands of these young New York-based swing stylists — led by bandleader and pianist Evan “Bibs” Palazzo and lead singer Elizabeth Bougerol — music first made famous decades ago comes alive through brassy horn arrangements and rollicking piano melodies.
Saturday, Oct. 8, 8 p.m. $57. $47 and $37. Jeanne Rimsky Theater at Landmark on Main Street, 232 Main St., Port Washington. (516) 767-6444 or www.landmarkonmainstreet.org.

Family Fun

Saddle up
Catch a glimpse of the Wild West at Old Bethpage Village in an ode to those days when cowboys ruled. That long ago era comes alive as modern day cowboys demonstrate their skills in a horse mounted shooting competition. This fast action event is based on the historical reenactment of shooting events held at Wild West Shows during the 19th century. Mounted contestants compete to see who has the best shot, using two .45 caliber revolvers each loaded with five rounds of specially prepared ammunition. Riders must be in full costume — chaps, suspenders, boots, and, of course, cowboy hats — in order to compete. They’ll be back again in November to ride for a final time this season.
Sunday, Oct. 9, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. $10, $7 children 4-14 and seniors. Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage. (516) 572-8400.
