Lynbrook Mayor Bill Hendrick renews residents' wedding vows

Love was in the air at the Lynbrook Public Library this Valentine’s Day as Mayor Bill Hendrick renewed the wedding vows of 17 couples.

“We said it’s Valentine’s Day let’s do something where people could go somewhere and enjoy themselves,” Hendrick said. “We thought it would be a couple of couples, and it turned out to be a lot of couples.”

Love birds came dressed for the occasion, some which have only been married for a few years, and others that have been together for decades. Floral arrangements lined the library as guests enjoyed a special reception, where cookies and coffee were served, as well as a cake from The Sweet Peace bakery.

Hendrick said one couple had been married for about 60 years, while one of the grooms surprised his bride with a brand-new wedding ring. “She switched rings and got very excited,” he said. “She was teary-eyed.”

The event went better then expected, Hendrick added, noting that it might become an annual tradition. “It was all very personal and very special to them,” he said. “It was like a packed venue.”
