Senior Kenny Lutz, who led the Lions in goals last season with 42, is off to a flying start in 2013 with 26 goals through six games.

Englehardt and Leonard are interchangeable parts, Petrullo said. They can make things happen from behind and in front of the cage. Leonard, a transfer from St. John’s, had 26 assists through six games and a team-leading 42 points, while Englehardt had 16 helpers. “They’re strong playmakers,” Petrullo said. “Tom made an impact for us as a freshman, and Joe’s been a great addition.”

Clark, who has also gotten time at attack, joined a midfield that returned many key pieces and figures to get stronger once sophomore Anthony Marino, who had 21 points last season, returns from injury. “Peter’s a big lefty and has fit right in,” Petrullo said. “I’m not surprised how much he’s contributed right away.”

Senior Joseph Biscardi and sophomore Sal Geneva returned and are off to strong starts. Through six games they each had eight goals. Juniors Andrew Biscardi and Andrew Leo are splitting the bulk of faceoffs and winning more draws than they lose, while Leo and sophomore Angelo Armine set the pace in ground balls with 14 apiece. Freshman Austin Valenti has made an impact with four goals and eight assists.

The in-close defense, Petrullo said, has benefitted from practicing every day against the red-hot offense. Juniors Kyle Frenger, James Lang and Mike Sanchez are the workhorses in front of junior goaltender John Grebe, who’s taken the starting job by the horns. “John gained some experience last season and rose up to make the job his this season,” Petrullo said. “He’s stepped up big-time so far.”

After a trip to Roberts Wesleyan this Saturday for a 1 p.m. faceoff, the Lions will play three of four at home — Skelos Sports Complex — including a visit from Dowling on April 10 at 7 p.m.
