A 71-year-old Elmont man who has dementia went missing last week, police said, and was found later on the same day an alert was released in an effort to find him.

According to police, Ralph Dixon, was last seen at Village Avenue in Elmont on July 3, and it was unclear where he was heading, or how he was traveling. Police said that Dixon often uses the Long Island Railroad and visits Jamaica and Woodside often. Later on July 3, police said, they located Dixon.

A Silver Alert was also released prior to Dixon being found. The alert is released by Nassau County Police to local hospitals, media and other organizations “when a senior citizen or other individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or other cognitive disorders goes missing.”
