When Michael Chimounov opened his barber shop last August, he knew he had launched his vision. He took over an existing shop and remodeled it, giving it a sports theme. New York team jerseys line the walls, and each barber station has its own flat screen television and cable box. Watch football while your little one watches Sponge Bob or plays a video game, as you both get your hair cut.

“My dream was to make a barber shop look like a sports bar and feel like home,” said Chimounov. He succeeded. After running a barber shop in New Hyde Park for nearly 10 years, he decided to open his own business. He was born in Uzbekistan in the Soviet Union, lived in Israel for nine years, and came the U.S. in 2004, where he became a barber.

Cool Cutz Barber Shop employs five talented barbers. There are four barber chairs and a fifth shaped like a car for the youngsters. In addition to haircuts and trims with hot towels, they do facials, shaves, beard trims, and/or hair color, followed by a shoulder massage with a vibrating hand machine. All types of cuts are offered, including designs on the scalp. The shop is modern, spacious, clean and colorful.

Wanting to give back to the community, Chimounov has introduced a fundraiser by partnering up with neighborhood schools. He currently donates $1 to the Camp Avenue School PTA for every child (from that school) who comes in for a haircut.

No appointment is necessary; they welcome walk-ins. Cool Cutz Barber Shop is open seven days a week. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plenty of parking is available in the back.
