The Maurer Foundation, a Long Island breast cancer education non-profit hosted its third Annual Motorcycle Ride on from Oceanside to Greenport on August 27.

The event covered nearly 100 miles of scenic riding.

Motorcycle riders were asked to provide a minimum $50 donation to participate, and were encouraged to raise additional funds in advance. Utopia Home Care, Inc., also sponsored the ride. The ride raised over $4,000 to support the Foundation’s breast health education programs.

Many riders sported pink balloons, special T-shirts, or pink helmets to raise awareness. The ride ended at Billy’s By the Bay seafood restaurant in Greenport.

This year the ride began at began at 3264 Neptune Ave, Oceanside. After check-in and breakfast the riders departed at 9:30 a.m.

The Foundation brings presentations on breast health to high schools, colleges, and community groups across the Long Island. The programs share tips on reducing breast cancer risk, including nutrition and exercise, and instruction on early detection techniques.

“This is one of our favorite fundraisers every year,” said Executive Director and Oceanside resident, Susan Samaroo. “Bikers in leather jackets may not look like the stereotypical breast cancer education supporters, but many of our participants have family members or friends who have been affected by breast cancer. They understand how important prevention and early detection really is, and want to make a difference. And, we have a lot of fun!”
