Islanders arena to feature new technology

The new Islanders arena at Belmont Park will feature the latest in technological advancements, co-owner Jon Ledecky announced earlier this month, with “smart” jerseys and virtual and augmented reality.

“That’s the future of sports, that’s the future of arenas,” Ledecky said at a tour with former Islanders. “That’s what happens when you’re starting something from scratch when you’re building a new building.”

The “smart” jerseys were unveiled at the National Basketball Association’s All-Star Technology Summit in February. There, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver used a phone application to change the name and number on the back of a jersey.

The arena could also feature virtual or augmented reality to give every patron an up-close view of the game, Ledecky said, although he noted to Newsday that there would be “no bad seats.”

Construction on the project is currently underway, and the arena is expected to be completed by the franchise’s 2021 - 22 season.
