Lynbrook, East Rockaway to host Homecoming festivities Saturday

The East Rockaway and Lynbrook school districts are each gearing up to show their school pride and host Homecoming festivities on Sept. 21.

East Rockaway will host a pep rally on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at the high school’s football field. Club Rock will continue the tradition of a pep rally parade to kick-off the festivities as athletes and coaches march from Centre Avenue Elementary School to the high school at 6:30 p.m.

On Sept. 22, the Rocks will play in the annual Louis Cosenza Scholarship Game when they host Carle Place/Wheatley School at 3 p.m. All proceeds will go to the Cosenza Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is given to a senior who has excelled in the classroom and on the athletic field.

The scholarship is in memory of Louis Cosenza, who was a health/physical education teacher at the high school when he was diagnosed with leukemia at age 31 in 1971. He taught for six years at the school before his death and also excelled in sports, previously earning a full scholarship to Adelphi University for soccer and baseball, while also being an honor student throughout high school and college. He played minor league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals organization before entering the teaching field.

In 1977, the scholarship fund was organized in his name for the benefit of the top scholar athlete, male or female, at East Rockaway High School. All donations can be sent to East Rockaway High School, 443 Ocean Ave., East Rockaway, N.Y. 11518 in care of the Louis Cosenza Scholarship Fund. Checks can be made out to East Rockaway High School.

Lynbrook’s Homecoming parade is scheduled for Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. and will be followed by the PTA Scholarship Game against Floral Park at Marion Street Elementary School at 2 p.m.
