Updated June 22 at 5:10 p.m.

Approximately 50 firefighters from the Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Inwood and Woodmere fire departments responded to at 6:14 a.m. on Wednesday at Cho-Sen Island restaurant at 367 Central Ave., in Lawrence.

A patrolling Nassau County police office saw smoke coming from the restaurant and called in the fire, LCFD Chief Joseph Sperber said. “It was labor intensive because the fire was deep seated in the cockloft,” he said. The cockloft is the space between the roof and the ceiling.

The fire had begun earlier in an area where there was construction work being done as that portion of the restaurant was being renovated, Sperber said. The fire was brought under control in 20 minutes and there were no injuries, he added.

Nassau County Fire Marshals investigated the blaze and it was not deemed suspicious.

Cho-Sen, a popular eatery in the Five Towns, serves a Kosher-Asian cuisine.
